Hydro‐Mechanical Measurements of Sheared Crystalline Rock Fractures With Applications for EGS Collab Experiments 1 and 2

چکیده

We present hydro-mechanical measurements that characterize shear on natural fractures in schist, amphibolite, and rhyolite specimens from the enhanced geothermal system (EGS) Collab Project's Experiment 1 2 sites (E1 E2) at Sanford Underground Research Facility. employed a triaxial direct method augmented with X-ray imaging to perform hydroshearing (injection-induced shearing) mechanical shearing naturally fractured situ stress conditions. Measurements included fracture permeability, strength, stress-dependent aperture, dilation, frictional strength. Results reveal must be permeable, weak, shear-oriented hydrosheared, only subset of observable were suitable. When sheared, permeability typically increased by factor 10 or more this increase was retained over time. However, slip did not always result increase. High phyllosilicate content associated exceptionally weak exhibited poor even decreased after stimulation. These combination site data used conduct slip-tendency analysis for different sets, we selected top candidate EGS sites. also found lower stronger E2 make challenging than E1 site. Overall, methods our work can applied any project identify joint sets are best suited hydroshearing, which turn help optimize well placement energy production.

A hydromechanical biomimetic cochlea: experiments and models.

The construction, measurement, and modeling of an artificial cochlea (ACochlea) are presented in this paper. An artificial basilar membrane (ABM) was made by depositing discrete Cu beams on a piezomembrane substrate. Rather than two fluid channels, as in the mammalian cochlea, a single fluid channel was implemented on one side of the ABM, facilitating the use of a laser to detect the ABM vibrat...

Observations from Borehole Dilution Logging Experiments in Fractured Crystalline Rock under Ambient and Pump Test Conditions

Identifying hydraulically active fractures in low permeability, crystalline-bedrock aquifers requires a variety of geophysical and hydrogeophysical borehole tools and approaches. One such approach is Single Borehole Dilution Tests (SBDT), which in some low flow cases have been shown to provide greater resolution of borehole flow than other logging procedures, such as vertical differential Heat ...

Numerical Studies of Fluid-rock Interactions in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (egs) with Co2 as Working Fluid

There is growing interest in the novel concept of operating Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) with CO2 instead of water as heat transmission fluid. Initial studies have suggested that CO2 will achieve larger rates of heat extraction, and can offer geologic storage of carbon as an ancillary benefit. Fluid-rock interactions in EGS operated with CO2 are expected to be vastly different in zones wit...
